Question #2 “What are we lacking in terms of historical interpretation (walking tours), etc.?”

  1. Aleut, Alutiiq and Creole history/culture is inadequately interpreted.
  2. The (1898-1932) USDA farm site behind the National Cemetery is under-utilized as interpretive tool.
  3. The Causeway is under-utilized as a resource, primarily due to access & safety
  4. Standard handouts that would be usable by all guides, charter operators and others. An easily available resource that could be obtained quickly on the web would be a useful tool. The information is available it just needs to be compiled in more concise fashion. By information I mean a succinct compilation of information that portrays substantive aspects of Sitka’s economy, history, culture, etc.
  5. Signage is inadequate (example -- How to get to Raptor Center – also safety concerns hwy/Raptor) Center access from Sitka National Historical Park to highway and then to Raptor Center & back)
  6. Development of the Turn-around (early airport site for Sitka – located @ Katlian & HPR)
  7. Wider sidewalks on Lincoln Street and selected other areas of Sitka

Special presentation about WW II Causeway

  1. Sitka Trail Works – Exec Drct – Deborah Lyons received $130,000 grant for Phase I Dvlpmnt
  2. Initially, this will involve clarifying land-ownership issues
  3. Planning and clearing – creating a clean, safe, accessible environment
  4. This initial phase will involve all of causeway from Nevski Island to Mogilnoi but NOT Makhnati Island. Makhnati Is. - island end of cswy – had big 6” and 155 mm guns) will be treated separately
  5. Sitka Trail Works will be partnering with Alaska State Parks and will be working cooperatively with other groups that are interested in helping with $$ and/or labor
  6. This project is one of 30 projects listed in the 2003 Sitka Trail Plan.
  7. Phase II will include Interpretation development and all related issues/challenges
  8. In 2005 a Working Group was established by Sitka Trail Works for this project
  9. What can you do? Identify resources: Individuals in community – WW II veterans, identify and present your own ideas about how this should be developed (share with STW or committee members). Identify bibliographies that specifically speak to this topic, support this project within the community.
